(EMDR)

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a unique form of psychotherapy that works to reduce the distress associated with traumatic memories, while helping the brain restore its inherent natural healing power.

The evidence-based approach of EMDR has been proven to help the mind heal from psychological trauma, much like the body instinctively heals from a cut or open wound. When patients experience disturbing and distressing memories of trauma or abuse, the brain’s healing system can be blocked or imbalanced, thereby creating a vicious cycle of defensive behaviors, intense suffering, addictions, and problematic relationships.

EMDR uses a proven therapeutic approach designed to open the brain’s natural pathway to healing after being blocked by previous experiences, which may include traumatic life challenges, physically abusive relationships, or emotional abuse. During treatment, patients will focus on traumatic memories, while stimulation in the form of specific eye movements helps to reshape the way that these painful memories are processed within the brain. As the brain’s healing process is unblocked and rebalanced, inner healing can finally begin to take its rightful course.

EMDR therapy is led by detailed protocols and procedures that work to reactivate the brain’s natural healing processes and restore mental wellness for a lifetime.

Psychoeducational Groups

These groups focus on educating patients in understanding the complexities that surround mental health issues, including the resulting behaviors and consequences, and are conducted in a structured small group environment.

The group content is presented in an unbiased and informational format, and often includes a combination of audio content, videos, or in-person lectures. The material covered within every segment is discussed in the group setting, with our licensed therapists facilitating discussions and presenting thought-provoking questions to enhance class interaction.

The primary purpose of this treatment approach is to inform and educate patients, ensuring that they have a heightened awareness of the behavioral, medical, and psychological consequences of mental health issues, addiction, and substance abuse. Psychoeducational groups do not maintain an exclusive focus on psychological issues; rather, they aim to help patients understand the holistic process of recovery and the support resources that are available to them.

Through a combination of actionable behaviors, educational awareness, and supportive resources, patients will be able to make healthier self-led choices that enhance their road to recovery. They will become motivated to overcome denial, embrace positive change, and enter the recovery stage of treatment with greater knowledge and increased self-awareness, while also helping their families better understand the challenges presented by mental health issues.

Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness is an essential component of substance abuse recovery that allows the patient to practice a nonjudgmental form of observation and self-reflection. The techniques used in this therapeutic practice give patients the opportunity to tap into the unlimited power held within the inner mind, as they deliberately focus attention on the present moment. They are able to harness their power and self-control to live in the now, without worrying about what the future brings, or dwelling on mistakes of the past.

When thoughts wander to a negative space, the techniques of mindfulness meditation allow the patient to gently bring their mind back to the positive. By using mindfulness meditation to quiet the mind and center the body, patients are better able to accept the past and let regrets slip away, while visualizing their dreams for tomorrow.

Practicing mindfulness meditation as a part of recovery offers the following benefits:

    • Helps patients become less judgmental and more compassionate
    • Teaches the importance of living in the present
    • Improves their ability to safely deal with negative thoughts and emotions
    • Develops feelings of connection with self and others
    • Increases self-acceptance, self-awareness, and self-worth
    • Restores a sense of calm and peace amid the stress of daily life
    • Teaches clients that they are not defined by their negative thoughts
    • Reduces impulsivity and increases emotional regulation
    • Improves ability to deal with stressful situations
    • Reduces risk of developing stress-related illness
    • Reduces feelings of anxiety and depression
    • Boosts the body’s immune system to help fight off disease

Yoga

Yoga, or yoking, is a powerful complement to conventional therapies and treatment modalities, and involves bringing together the mind and body in pursuit of self-awareness, stress reduction, and improved mental and physical health.

The practice of yoga centers on an eight-fold path that helps individuals discover internal and external truths, develop meditation techniques, and improve mental clarity, all while surrendering to a higher power and a heightened sense of spiritual awakening. Research studies have shown that there is a correlation between the practice of yoga and its ability to regulate dopamine levels within the body. Styles of yoga that are centered on intense breathwork, such as Kundalini, also help to release endorphins that naturally trigger feelings of happiness and pleasure within the mind and body.

Stress is one of the primary triggers of maladaptive behaviors, and yoga is a practice that can be easily incorporated into daily life as a way to support ongoing recovery, stress relief, and relapse prevention. By intentionally committing to a regular yoga practice, patients can build flexibility and strength, while also achieving internal healing and improved mental consciousness.

Independent Living Skills Groups

This effective psychoeducational group helps patients prepare for what life will be like after recovery, while teaching essential life skills that are necessary for daily functioning, educational development, career success, and independent self-care. The team at HRC will help set up our patients to maintain a productive and enriching pathway toward success, achievement, and fulfillment, as they transition to a world full of brand-new expectations that may be unfamiliar and daunting.

As they emerge from the darkness of substance abuse and addiction, patients may have little experience in areas such as budgeting, social communication, nutrition, and employment. Our independent living skills group therapists help participants empower patients with important life skills to achieve personal and professional success. As patients work together to develop healthy independent living skills that build self-confidence and self-esteem, they are also establishing the foundation for a lifetime of improved health and wellness.

During this program, patients will learn how to:

    • Create a resume and prepare for a job interview
